Pet expo 2015

5 May 2015

The annual 2015 Pet Expo, held at Spruce Meadows on April 25 and 26, was a huge success and a lot of fun! Our booth and display received great exposure and generated a lot of interest in our club.

There were about 6,000 visitors to the event over the two days. Our booth was probably one

of the busiest with a steady crowd of people.

Thank you to all club members who stopped by our booth. Thanks also to the club executive

members who manned the booth all weekend

We had a nice selection of birds on display, including Love birds, Gouldians , a Weaver,

Canaries, Zebra finch, Button Quail  and chicks.

Visitors could also hold and have their pictures taken , with ring - necked silkie doves.

Four - day old Button Quail chicks were a huge hit! Expo visitors flocked to watch the little chicks running around and eating.

Club members manning our booth joked to Heidi that she must have repeated the words “They are

Button Quail, the world’s smallest quail. They’re about twice the size now as when they hatched

and when they hatched, they were the size of bumblebees” at least a thousand times!

Visiting our friends in Edmonton!

17 February 2015

On Sunday February 8th few our members Vedran Matkovic, Cameron Graham, Ed Moston, Ivan Cengic & his sons Tony and Ivan- Petar Cengic made a trip to visit our friends and one of the best finch and canary breeders in Alberta!

Our first stop at 10am was in St. Albert at Jay Bunker's Canary Barn. One of the most successful canary breeder shared with us some of his secrets of breeding. In our tour in almost three hours Jay explained the food he uses, the way he organized his bird room... and he even show us his collection of his bird books.

Our next stop at 1pm was in Edmonton at Salim Moulaeb also one of the most respected canary breeder where we received a very warm welcome. Despite the fact that he recently had a surgery Mr. Salim was an amazing host. He manage to show us all of his birds and the way he is running his bird room.

At 2:30pm we attended NACBS meeting at Bellvue Community Hall. We share our plans for 2015 and have great time with other members of NACBS. W left the meeting with few new friends and a lot of great experiences.

Our next and last host was Jean Tarr. Around 5pm at Finch room we visited one of the most successful finch breeder. In a short but very educational hour Jean answered on all of ours burning questions.

All I can say is that trip was very successful and that we went home with few new ideas, beautiful experience and few new friends. We arrived in Calgary around 9pm tired but satisfied.

Leg Band order for 2015 (Red)

November 28, 2014

To use our ring service you must be a member of the RACBC (current membership is just $20.00 yearly).

We have on hand supplies of AACC closed year dated anodized aluminum rings (leg bands) in sizes A to Y. Aluminum ring sizes A to S are available in multiples of 10. Sizes T to Y are considered parrot sizes (the cost of parrot rings is slightly higher as they must be sturdier than rings for smaller birds.) Parrot sizes can be ordered and sold singly both in aluminum and steel. A small quantity of steel rings in sizes T to Y are kept on hand. Colors of rings are different each year. Closed rings are year dated, numbered and have letter size and AAC on them (they must be placed on the bird's leg at a young age, approximately one week but it does depend on the species).

CODED rings are made with individual initials or aviary code or whatever the purchaser chooses. Numbers and letters can be up to 3 or 4 in length on the larger sizes, and can be a combination of numbers and letters. Two to three letters on the small sizes or a combination, but on size A it is preferred only two, and low numbers. The purchaser has to remember that these rings are specially engraved for them, and take a little longer to be received from our supplier, eight weeks even though orders are sent to us by our supplier via Express Mail. Coded rings do NOT have letter size imprinted. Registration of each code must be paid yearly ($5). All codes must be approved by the Ring Registrar, as the AACC carries over 400 codes and each one must be individual. Parrot size coded bands are available in aluminum or steel with a minimum order of 5 bands.

Also on hand are plastic SPLIT rings in ten different colors. Sizes range XF to X3 and come plain, numbered or striped, again in multiples of 10. 1FB and 2FB come only in plain and numbered, and do not require a tool to apply. An application tool is required for sizes from XF to X3 and is supplied when requested (no charge) with your order. On hand are undated metal splits in sizes C to Y, aluminum colour only, numbered, with AAC imprinted. Sizes T to Y in metal splits can be ordered singly. No tool is required for metal splits. Ring cutters are also available for a fee for sizes A to S size leg bands and T to Z including stainless steel bands

First Club promotion!

February 15, 2014

On Saturday February 15. RACBC members Vedran Matkovic and Cameron Graham visited Poultry, Pigeon, Waterfowl, and Rabbit Show in Wetaskiwin (Drill Hall). Besides enjoying a great show we were also there to promote our Club. We were happy to answer all of the questions our potential members had to ask us and to exchange some experiences with same minded people. Unfortunately this time we only had canaries and finches to present but none of the less we hope that we showed what we do and who we are. At the end we just want to thank all of the clubs, breeders and bird fanciers to supporting our newly funded club.
